To the Ancient Celts all things spiritual were in Nature, not above it. They looked to nature for inspiration and spirals in fern fronds were a natural choice and were used as a motif. Celtic spirals represent an energy flow in or out in a pattern or design. The first triple spiral or triskele appeared in the sixth century BC and the three arms represented the forces of nature as earth, water, and fire. The spiral symbol is not, however, exclusive to Celtic culture. It appears throughout history from many artforms and can be traced back to 2500 BC.
